To encourage secularism, democracy, republicanism and human rights values in Iran
About the IAR
We are a collective of social, civic, and cultural activists who have come together with a shared belief: the profound challenges facing our beloved Iran cannot be resolved without the overthrow of the current regime.
Through our study of Iran’s contemporary history, we have gained a deep understanding of the power structures in our homeland. We recognize that just as the overthrow of the Shah in 1979 led to religious tyranny instead of democracy, there is a real risk that a new dictatorship could arise after the collapse of the current regime.
Over the past two decades, many of us, like countless others, have pursued reformist approaches, participating in movements such as the Green Movement and the Purple Movement, in hopes of achieving structural change. However, the entrenched power within the system has consistently quashed these efforts, leaving us disillusioned with the possibility of reform. We now firmly believe that the current system is beyond repair.
Our preference is for a non-violent transition, and we are committed to laying the groundwork for the establishment of democracy in Iran’s future. We believe these foundations lie in strengthening civil society, fostering collective resistance, forming political parties, building coalitions among opposition groups, empowering and educating the populace, and uniting Iranians both inside and outside the country.
We recognize the vital roles that women, youth, students, and ethnic minorities—including Kurdish, Baloch, Arab, and Turkish communities—along with trade unions and workers, play in the ongoing struggle for “Women, Life, Freedom.” We stand in solidarity with all groups and activists dedicated to this cause. Within our organization, we are committed to identifying and eliminating discrimination against women and minorities, striving for gender equality. We practice democratic principles, ethics, and the rule of law daily, and we are dedicated to maintaining a transparent and democratic organizational structure.
Despite our diverse political perspectives, we have chosen to collaborate, setting aside differences to unite on a critical issue: the establishment of a republican form of government. We envision a republic as a government of the people, by the people. In this system, no individual will hold power indefinitely, and the tenure of rulers will be limited to a predefined period. Leaders will be elected by the people, and in the event of poor performance, the people will have the power to remove them. There will be no hereditary or lifelong positions, even symbolic ones. No ideology, religion, race, ethnicity, or individual will be above the law; everyone will have equal rights under the law.
We believe that the future political system of Iran should be determined by the people through a referendum. In such a referendum, we advocate for a democratic secular republic, as we believe this system offers the best chance of preventing a return to tyranny. We are convinced that the rotation of power among popular parties will reduce the risk of autocracy and contribute to the long-term establishment of democracy in Iran.
Our commitment is to return power to the people of Iran. In every decision and negotiation, we will always prioritize the national interests of the Iranian people.

Our Organisation Values
Commitment to Democratic Principles
We define democracy as the establishment of structures for holding democratic elections, where every citizen has the right to freely choose and be elected. This includes the formation of political parties, fostering healthy competition among them, and respecting political pluralism and cultural diversity. We uphold the principle of power rotation among various parties, the conduct of free and fair elections to elect representatives, majority rule with respect for minority rights, and the elimination of all forms of discrimination, ensuring equal rights for all citizens. Iar members actively practice democratic behavior and principles in our intra-group elections and collective decision-making processes.
Adherence to International Human Rights Standards
We are committed to upholding the rights of all citizens, preserving human dignity, and adhering to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and its annexes to eliminate discrimination. By embracing diversity within Iranian society, Iar members are dedicated to integrating human rights standards into all our group’s decisions and actions.
Preserving Iran’s Territorial Integrity and Decentralizing Power
We are committed to maintaining Iran's territorial integrity and eliminating discrimination through the decentralization of power. After the transition, Iar members will recognize Iran as a unified country within its current internationally recognized borders, regardless of whether the governance system is centralized or decentralized.
Secularism
We advocate for the complete separation of religion and politics in the new constitution. Iar members believe in the government’s neutrality towards all religions, non-interference in citizens' religious affairs, the absence of an official state religion, and the protection of religious freedoms as fundamental principles of secularism.
Republicanism and Democracy
We believe in republicanism and democracy as the future political system for Iran post-transition. We are committed to designing mechanisms that prevent the resurgence of tyranny, authoritarianism, or any form of extralegal power structures, whether provincial, monarchical, or ideological. In our vision, all political authorities after the Islamic Republic should be elected based on merit, for a limited period, by the people through free and democratic elections. One of Iar Group’s goals is to strengthen the discourse of republicanism in society, consolidate the republican bloc within the opposition, and bolster the influence of republican forces in Australia.
Commitment to Non-Violence
We believe that non-violence is essential for establishing democracy in Iran’s future. Our aim is to empower civil society institutions, strengthen social movements, trade unions, and address popular demands to ensure the stability of democracy after the transition.
